A Brief Chat With the Authors of Shadow Atlas: Jane Yolen

Visit Jane online at: https://www.janeyolen.com/.

Hillary: What is the most magical/terrifying place you’ve visited?

Jane: The Scottish Highlands, and on the Isle of Harris, off the Scottish coast  where we found  a sheeling, which is  a summer field for cattle-grazing that looked over a turquoise ocean with palm trees…..,IN SCOTLAND!!!

Hillary: How does place generally fit into your writing?

Jane: I take long walks and always come back with new ideas and every new place we visit becomes a story or the background for a story.  The sheeling found its way into a love-gone-wrong short story; going bird watching with my husband and children turned into my Caldecott-winning OWL MOON. I am working on a series of children’s middle grade fantasy novels called The Rioal & Ancient Monster Hunters, all set in the town of Anstruther in Fife, not far from my Scottish house. The first is called SEA DRAGON OF FIFE.

Hillary: What is one place that is top of your to-go list and why?

Jane: I have a house in Scotland and for me, it is there.
